Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor: Blog tasks

1) How do audiences generally watch music videos these days?
In the modern day, audiences can watch music videos on platforms such as YouTube which is free to access.

2) What opportunities has the growth of digital technology and YouTube created for new music artists?
It has made it easier for them to grab audiences attention and making themselves famous by uploading videos of them singing. However, with artists that are already in the music industry it could be argued that the growth of technology has dramatically led to a decrease in how much those artists get paid for their songs as most of the time, only audiences are benefited.

3) What is P2P and why did it cause huge problems for the music industry?
P2P is where fans distribute artist's music amongst themselves illegally. It has caused huge problems for the music industry as audiences were getting music for free meaning artists weren't getting paid whilst their work was out there for everyone to listen to.

4) Do you think the internet has given audiences more power over who becomes successful in the music industry? Why?
In my opinion, the internet has given audiences more power  over who becomes successful in the music industry  by gaining popularity is not completely based on the music made but also the relationship with the audience. They can really affect an artist's reputation and so by having a supportive fanbase, you can become more successful. However, having an audience with negative views will cause problems for the artist

5) How has Fortnite demonstrated the potential future for music videos and promotional opportunities for the music industry? You can read more on this event in this Verge feature.
It means that anyone can announce their own concert or make a music video along with no restrictions on the number of people that can attend. This means that artists have means to make more money that they deserve and aren't getting.

Arctic Monkeys: Industry

1) How did the Arctic Monkeys first achieve success and build up their fanbase?
They created a video designed to look like a 1980s TV performance on programmes such as "Top of the Pops" or "The Old Grey Whistle Test". It opens with the singer introducing the song and adding the words 'Don't believe the hype' which could be a reference to the online following the band built up using Myspace.

2) Why was P2P file sharing an unexpected aspect to Arctic Monkeys' early success?
Arctic Monkeys' music was shared on P2P sites, though this wasn’t known by the band or promoted when they found out. It allowed their music to be heard by their audience
and encouraged people to talk and share their music creating a buzz about the band. Their fan base moved online, creating online communities where they could share songs and information.

3) How does the rise of Arctic Monkeys differ from how One Direction were formed and became famous?
Arctic Monkeys were not sponsored by a company when they stated or brought together they were friends from schools who were sponsored later in there work. However, One Direction were formed by Simon Cowell who later signed them a deal with his own record label - Sicko.

4) How has technological convergence changed the music industry?
Technological convergnce changed the music industry by allowing us to access all types of media through one device which has fundamentally changed the way music videos are produced, consumed and shared. It has created challenges and opportunities for the music industry, artists and record companies.

5) Has the internet been a positive or negative development for traditional record companies? Why?
Its positive as it makes the companies easier to access and allows bands to become more popular by a cheaper and easier than traditionally. However its negative as due to illegal downloads and P2P file sharing, they may not earn as much money since its easier to access the music.

Arctic Monkeys: Audience

1) What is the main Arctic Monkeys audience - demographics and psychographics?
Their audience are likely to be white, middle class and reasonably young. Psychographic groups might include: Reformers & Explorers. Recent global success pushed the band into bigger psychographic groups such as Mainstreamers.

2) What audience pleasures are offered by the music video for I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor?
Audience pleasures would include diversion - the song is upbeat and fast-paced. Fans who followed the band from the early days might find a sense of personal relationship while many young people would get a sense of personal identity from the lyrics to the song (about going out to a club and drinking).

3) Pick out three particular shots, scenes or moments in the video that would particularly appeal to Arctic Monkeys fans. Why did you choose those moments?
The shot of the whole band in one frame appeals to the audience as they get a sense of nostalgia. The final scene in the video where the entire band can be seen again to convey nostalgia. The medium close up shot of the vocalist whilst also seeing the drummer in the background to show how committed each band member is.

4) What is nostalgia and why is it a key audience pleasure for the Arctic Monkeys music video?
Nostalgia which refers to an impulse to ascertain and enact the ideas and values of a remembered past, and reflective nostalgia, which refers to a longing for ideas and material lost to time. It is a key pleasure for the arctic monkey's music video as the video is older and gives vibes and flashbacks from the 1980s for the loyal fan base.

5) How are fans positioned to respond to the video? What does the artist want fans to take from their video?
The artist wants fans to know what kind of band they are from the video and for the audience to see the band as more traditional and treatable rather than One Direction who were put together by a judge in a show.
