Reception theory
1) Preferred Reading: This is the message or ideology/ belief the producers want you to go away with eg: a McDonald's burger being shown in an advert is telling us that it is delicious and you cant get it somewhere else.
2) Oppositional reading: This is when then the consumer takes away an opposite message or ideology/ believe than the producers want you to go away with eg: The McDonald's burger is very unhealthy and fatty.
4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?
Young people might construct an oppositional reading of the trailer as the portrayal of teenagers is unfair and negative. It stereotypes them where in reality, most teenagers are well behaved and are not violent, dangerous etc.
Preferred readings- the producers are initially trying to advertise their new product in this case a Delicious in this case a burger which is supposedly bigger and better and can not be bought anywhere else about from McDonald's .
Oppositional reading- Some people may be offended about this particular advert as some may be vegetarians (don't eat meat ) therefore advertising meant as something that is so delicious may offend them and that the burger is really unhealthy to those who want to keep their figure.
Negotiated reading- some consumers might not like this specific advert due to the fact that it isn't their favorite thing from the menu however aren't offended by it because they eat from the restaurant or that even though the burger looks appetising it isn't their normal meal.
2) Oppositional reading: This is when then the consumer takes away an opposite message or ideology/ believe than the producers want you to go away with eg: The McDonald's burger is very unhealthy and fatty.
3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?
The Harry Brown trailer positions the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film by portraying the young people as bad, negative and heavily influenced by violence and it also positions the audience to the respond to the teenagers as violent, out of control, and in need of someone older to discipline them. They are represented as an enemy in the eyes of society as they're anti-social and there's always this clash between young people and older people.

6) Now find your own advertisement and write a 200 word analysis using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.
Preferred readings - the producers are initially trying to advertise their new product in this case a Rogue by Rihanna perfume which is meant to be better that any other perfumes newly out and because it is by Rihanna the product is rare and very limited.
Negotiated readings- Even though the perfume may make a woman feel powerful and bold and it is by Rihanna, for some consumers it maybe too expensive to buy and not worth spending a lot of money on a perfume bottle when money can be spent on necessary things.
Opposional readings- Some consumers may find this advertisement too offensive as it is inappropriate for younger people to see and view. Also it puts a bad name on the product because of how Rihanna is laid on the floor as she looks very sexual which then gives the product a bad name.
